Hypertrophy is the scientific term for an increase in muscular size. It occurs when muscle protein synthesis exceeds muscle protein breakdown. But how do we trigger that synthesis? The fitness industry is full of confusing advice, but the science is actually quite clear.
There are three main mechanisms of muscle hypertrophy: mechanical tension, metabolic stress, and muscle damage. Of these, mechanical tension is by far the most important.
Chasing "the pump" (metabolic stress) feels great, but if you aren't adding weight to the bar or doing more reps over time (increasing tension), your muscles won't grow.
Mechanical tension is created by lifting heavy weights through a full range of motion. To maximize this, you need to take your sets close to failure (the point where you cannot perform another rep with good form).
If you lift the same weights for the same number of reps forever, you will look the same forever. You must force the body to adapt by gradually increasing the stimulus. You can do this by:
Your body cannot build new tissue out of nothing. You need to consume adequate protein (roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight) and slightly more calories than you burn (a caloric surplus).
Building muscle takes patience. It is a slow, biological process. Stick to a well-designed program for at least 8-12 weeks before evaluating its effectiveness. Track your workouts, eat your protein, and prioritize your sleep.
